4 Common Myths About Spells. (REVISED)
When talking about witchcraft, magick and spellcraft in general, propaganda and misinformed media hype has many thinking about baneful magick and how it has put humankind into danger, whether it is scenes from the books or from movies. Magick and spell-casting are surrounded by ill informed myths and misconceptions that eventually distorted its true values and principles. What these myths are and how they are not true is what this list endeavors to explain and clarify. Myth 1: Those who practice spell-casting and magick worship the Devil or Satan. For those who practice and follow witchcraft, good and evil is irrelevant for it is subjective and therefore can be deceptive. What is important is that every magick spell is carefully thought over and the need for the outcome must be great (be it for the benefit of others, yourself, or otherwise). The need has to be strong, meaning you KNOW without a doubt in your psyche, that no other solution will do, this includes curses and hexes, we will discuss this further in some detail below. In addition to that, the Devil or Satan is another misinterpreted and highly controversial concept. Many who practice certain denominations of witchcraft do not include this concept within the witch’s pantheon. Hell is another Abrahamic religious construct and to put it quite simply, a majority of Wiccans and Pagan followers do not believe in it. It does not mean that because they are not concerned with hell that they would commit evil acts. Majority of Wiccans and Pagans seek instead to commit altruistic and beneficial acts because they know that this would reflect later on in their lives and even in their next life. Satanism is a part of the occult communities and they honestly get a bad rap even from the so-called 'White Witches' (witches who only practice altruistic magick), many of whom claim Wicca as their religious system which I find to be absurdly hypocritical considering Wiccans claim to be inclusive and non-judgemental. Like any other religious system Satanism has different denominations and various emphasis on their beliefs and practices. As is explained briefly here: • Lavey Satanism is perhaps the most popular due to its founder Anton Lavey and his publishing of the now infamous Satanic Bible and his erection of the Church of Satan. Contrary to media hype and popular misunderstanding, Lavey Satanists do not worship nor do they believe in an actual entity of Satan. To them Satan is a symbol of man's shadow self. This is a psychology concept popularized by Carl Jung, a contemporary psychologist to Freud. the shadow self is essentially all the parts bot ones personality and behaviour that is considered bad or distasteful and is ultimately ignored. Anger, Greed, Envy, and other so called sins, are seen by Lavey Satanists as crucial parts of human nature that instead of ignoring or denying their existence, are embraced along with their better sides such as honor, respect and love. I would encourage the reader to take further studies by reading the Satanic Bible by Anton Lavey. Approach the work with an objective mind, holding any preconceived notions about the text until you have at least read the material. Spells are not a video game, nor are they something to be taken like a toy. You don't play with spells. They are a means of communicating with the universe to influence your intent or desire. Spells could also be a way of communicating with the gods and goddesses, and therefore are seen as a highly spiritual artform as well as a creative science. Spells do not normally have the kind of visual effects or recorded sounds of movie effects. In fact, clever spell casters are said to be able to cast a spell in the twinkling of the eye, which is a funny way of saying incredibly fast. A skilled spell caster would be able to use magick instantly without props and with even little being said or done. Natural magick is in the mind, which is more than just the brain. The mind is the totality of the human consciousness and a strong mind can accomplish almost anything. In fact this moves us to the next myth about spells. Myth 3. Casting spells would require very rare materials. Casting spells do not require you to use rare and weird materials. Usually those who practice spellcraft will use natural materials such as herbs, incense, candles, oils, flowers and other nature based items. But even these materials are not wholly important in the spell casting process. What is important is the emotional energy and the unwavering, focused intent. The items are there only to aid in the containment and directing of our focused energy towards our intent. These would be the things that would make your spell effective. Myth 4. Spells can make things possible out of thin air. Spells should be seen as probability enhancement techniques. The magick works with the forces of nature not against them. There is a considerable amount of physical follow-through that should be combined with one's spell if you want to experience any amount of success. For this reason it would be prudent to view spells as a signal to not only our subconscious but to the natural universe as well that a needed change is desired and the workings of the spell shall be the blueprint from which this desire should take form to manifest by. Something doesn't come from nothing, this is as true with spellcraft as it is with anything else in life. Suggested Reading:
